Software Overview

BizController is an analytical tool to support strategic management by offering functions to design and maintain financial budgets, plans and any other reports that rely on prospective financial information.

In complex and ever changing reporting environments, it is important that the flexibility of financial modelling be preserved. For this reason, rather than attempting to replace Excel spreadsheets, BizController integrates with the calculations or assumptions the user already has in them, and steps in where Excel does not do particularly well – that is where data is consolidated and aggregated.

In simple words, BizController monitors the spreadsheets that have been registered with it and updates its database automatically when data have been modified in any of the spreadsheets. The software uses ”keywords” or “tags” to allow the user to mark the rows and columns in a spreadsheet that should be synchronized with BizController. BizController treats this information as an assumptions layer and stores it in a consistent and transparent manner along several dimensions for subsequent processing and presentation in reports.

The approach described above has many advantages over both pure Excel usage on the one hand and large ERP systems on the other. Most organisations already have own Excel models or calculations that are most adequate in forecasting for each individual reporting item. However they have to be linked somehow to the final financial statements and this is often achieved by creating the so-called spaghetti spreadsheets. Unfortunately such spreadsheets are error-prone and difficult to check, review or audit. BizController solves this problem by enforcing a consistent, double-entry approach to formulating base assumptions and eliminates many formulas and links that would otherwise be necessary. At the same time, the user does not have to retype or manually import planning data from Excel into an external system as is often the case in many dedicated solutions.

It should be remembered that reliable assumptions are fundamental to the usefulness and quality of a financial plan. They should include realistic parameters and correct interrelations between planning variables, properly reflecting the business model of an organisation. These therefore need to be defined individually for every organization before they can be manipulated with BizController.

BizController is installed on the user’s machine, thus minimising implementation costs. At the same time, it can collect information from spreadsheets or forms modified by other users, offering basic networking functionality in this way. Unlike with intranet-based forms or server installations, the technology used by BizController allows for fast and easy modification and adaptation of the reporting system to the changing business needs of an organisation.

Basic features include:

  • Integration with Microsoft Excel XP, 2003, 2007; 2010;

  • Two modes of operation: normal and simplified (the simplified mode allows to plan on financial statement level and does not require setting up the full chart of accounts – useful for consultancies and ad hoc assignments);

  • Multiple reports can be opened and refreshed at the same time;

  • The user can build own templates and reuse them to build new financial reports using a simple editor;

  • Historical data can be imported into the database and can supersede planned data as time passes;

  • Cost centre/profit centre support;

  • Each plan can be made up of alternative transactions for each scenario;

  • Each plan can be saved as a separate version;

  • Automatic synchronisation of changes made to underlying spreadsheets with assumptions;

  • Intelligent tagging ensures that the right data gets synchronized even when new columns or rows are added to the spreadsheets; there’s no risk of broken links or integrity problems;

  • One-click publishing to Excel of generated reports;

  • 4 different types of reports;

  • Low implementation cost and easy installation on a local machine (Windows XP/Vista/7/8);

  • Support for multithreading speeds refreshing multiple reports at the same time.
